Oh Land – Getting Inspired With VoiceLive Touch
“Being able to play parts of my songs without backing singers or a whole bunch of gear is fantastic. I can do so many things with just this one unit like reverbs, delays and harmonies at the push of a button.”
Oh Land is a singer-songwriter from Copenhagen, Denmark who currently lives in New York. She is currently recording her new album which is due to be released in 2011. Recently on tour, she has been using the TC-Helicon VoiceLive Touch extensively.
Oh Land describes her music as “Electronic Pop with a very experimental element”…
“I’m a big fan of all electronic instruments and their sounds. I started out programming beats and doing electronic production but I am still a big fan of classical music, strings and choirs also and this plays a huge role in my own compositions.”
Oh Land started playing music in 2007. She originally grew up in a house with a lot of music as both of her parents were musicians. However, choosing to not be like them she decided to be a dancer. After an unfortunate back injury she turned her ear towards music and that’s what she’s been doing ever since.
She shares, “When I stopped dancing I bought a load of equipment and started recording in my bedroom. I threw a lot of stuff out on MySpace and an A&R from a Danish Indie Label (Fake Diamond Records) heard me and signed me to the label. I then released my first album entitled “Fauna” in 2008. After touring for a while in Denmark I travelled to America to perform at SXSW and I was discovered by Epic Records (US) and was signed and moved to New York. At the beginning of this year I moved to Williamsburg. Despite loving the energy of New York City and being inspired lyrically and musically by the hustle and bustle it’s really nice to come home to somewhere a little more silent.
All my songs are inspired by events in my own life. A lot of the songs are about love and fear but often wrapped in metaphor and fairytales. I come from a country that has a very long fairytale tradition and growing up dancing and seeing ballet’s like Swan Lake and I think that way of telling stories is really natural to me and it inspires me. For example, I have a song called “Wolf and I” which is actually a love story but is wrapped into an almost mythological tale about a wolf and the moon having a secret love affair and they can only meet when the sun goes down as the sun is jealous. I like to make up little stories.”
“Instantly, when you sing one note, you feel like you have a whole backing and colour behind you.”
Oh Land says she gets her inspiration from everywhere – “When I first started making music I would get inspiration from different sounds. I got Logic and would record anything that made a sound in my apartment, even pots and pans. Then, I’d make beats out of them and developed soundscapes and put lyrics on top of them, kind of like a musical poem. These days though, the way I write is completely different because I’ve gotten really into finding the purest song that I could possibly write so I’ve really tried to dig deep into songwriting and start with melodies and words. Now, I often feel that I get my inspiration from a dialogue I’ve had with somebody or perhaps something I’ve overheard on the subway…”
When asked what lead her to start using TC-Helicon’s VoiceLive Touch she responded, “In my music I always have a very strong vocal component that tends to carry the whole production. I’m very interested in vocal sounds and effects so the VoiceLive Touch is in many ways the perfect gadget for me as I can really illustrate that element in my songwriting and music. Being able to play parts of my songs without backing singers or a whole bunch of gear is fantastic. I can do so many things with just this one unit like reverbs, delays and harmonies at the push of a button. I use the harmony effect most at the moment and this is the one that I’m most excited about.
There’s just something about vocal harmonies that I enjoy, I think it’s such a pure thing hearing people singing in harmony. The VoiceLive Touch definitely inspires me to make music. Instantly, when you sing one note, you feel like you have a whole backing and colour behind you. Chords in general, especially vocal chords are very inspiring to me. I often get very carried away with it during live sound check. I have to try not to overuse it as it’s very possible to get carried away.“
