Editing, styles & effects – VoiceLive 2

Take a tour of the edit menus on VoiceLive 2. The paradigm is essentially a tab for each effect block, then rows of up to 4 parameters. The most common parameters are always at the top. There is a lot of work deciding which parameters to include, but also the placement of the parameters, names, values, etc. We have a really simple process for managing these changes which let us experiment with different menus and parameters in each build of software.

    This is helpful. Thank you.

Can someone “hold my hand” and guide me through the following:

I’ve been using a TC helicon Create (old one) for 3 years or so. I use patch #23 a lot and wish to be able to recreate that sound patch onto the voicelive 2 that I just bought yesterday.

If someone could guide me through this slowly it would meet my immediate need (because I am doing a gig in a few days and don’t want to somehow hook up both machines!) AND it will help me a great deal in understanding this incredible but complex voicelive 2.

    MANY THANKS!

    Peter

  1. Im also curious about an upcoming editor. It would be a shame to keep bending down to play with the settings, as well as scrolling through menus directly on the voicelive2.

Such a shame there’s no editor. It’s really where this unit is lacking. I’ve bought it and am completely bogged down in scrolling menus and finding a tough time of it. Any hope? Any chance?

It would be great to see a list of the styles for each effect. I know little about editing all of the parameters and would rely on using the styles to change effects. Are there many for each effect or just a few. Might help determine if I would get Voicelive 2 or Voicetone Create XT.

  2. If you mead growl, head and chest resonance, breath the answer is no. One recommendation in my beta test was to possibly bypass the guitar features and replace them with some of the voice modeling attributes you’ve mentioned.

Also, I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see the voice be able to drive that big beautiful blue tuner. How cool would it be, if a fledgling singer could turn to one of his/her musicians and call out notation by viewing the tuner display.

Helicon constantly is surprising me…so who knows what will be available in VL3? If you really need the modeling then buy the flagship…it’s worth it if you’re willing to deeply delve into it…very cool!

    Peace,

    B

Does VoiceLive 2 have the modelling effects similar to VoiceWorksPlus?

  3. Yes – worked like a dream…even accepts the same preset, many times over as steps, and all of those can be modulated as well. Even better than I had hoped for…even easier than VL1 :)

  4. Currently I’m beta testing VL2. Take a look at the top of the TC blog page for my findings. This is the second time they’ve sent it to me and now it is in good working order. Granted you don’t have Vyzor for this but the new App works great! Everything you need to update firmware, backup or restore settings are all right there in the app. I’ve tried each tab and every feature of the app and so far everything has worked swimmingly.

A few comments earlier, Mike Riffen gave instruction as to how he got his VL1 working again. Thanks Mike…I’ve been so busy the past two weeks, beta testing ,recording, and performing that I haven’t had the chance to try your troubleshooting tips. It’s my guitarist’s VL1 that’s been on the fritz from the git go. Unfortunately it’s been sent in for repairs 3 times and each time we get it back nothing seems to have been healed. So, we’ll try anything. Thanks for your insight Mike!

I want everyone to know that the VL2 is superb and offers at least twice the power of the VL1. Edits are extremely easy to make. Tonight’s testing for me will involve MIDI…controlling harmony with a keyboard and then using VL2 as Master and VL1 as slave. I welcome any comments or questions on my blog as I go through this. The only problem I’ve had so far, after the new firware, is that the SET AUTO KEY seems to be global, which can make modulating during a song rather difficult to get around when using harmony structures. Also, I doesn’t appear that storing a preset captures the Key Signature, so you may have to edit this each time you use it. I’m still waiting for feedback on that one.

On an up note, the TC staff always get back to me the same day that I propose questions. I have high hopes that we’ll be given a lil’ more capability concerning this feature. However, with the roll out date so close, I imagine it would be an upgrade at a later date.

It’s a good time to be alive!!!

The default for SET KEY is global, but you can change it to per preset in the Setup / System tab. When global is off, key and scale is saved with a preset.

    Hi
Is all the edibility still there as in the voicelive ( formants changes / individual harmony levels / custom scales ) as the voicelive is excellent bar the lack of guitar triggering And the the guitar trigger pedal never worked for me, so bought the harmany G which is great but lacks the edits of voicelive.
So are the encoders a pain still or has that been sorted ?
The guys at Vyzor must love you lot, we waited three years to get a working editor , then you change the voicelive, your not a part of Apple by any chance ?
    Great products Thanks

VoiceLive 2 has all the editing parameters like individual levels, genders, scales, etc. The original VoiceLive has pots, VoiceLive 2 uses encoders which make editing easier. The Vyzor guys do love us, we a loyal customer! – we love them because they make great editors.

Hi…Great video…I own a Voiceworks Plus and in great need of a simular video so I can visually see how to apply micromod effects…voice modeling…etc…the manual is so vague… please record a video to help all of us who have already purchased Voiceworks Plus but are becoming discouraged because of the lack of knowledge and step by step instructions…thanks….please help….love the product but…all the bells and whistles are no good unless a person knows how to apply them…

There is a series of support videos on a number of products, including VoiceWorksPlus, that have been filmed, edited and ready to post on the support site. We expect them to be up within the coming week.

Hi does the Vyzor editor work with VL2 ?
Have you got rid of those crazy overshoot edit nobs from the VL ? they drove me nuts
    Thanks.

The edit knobs are encoders, not pots as they were with VoiceLive. There is no editor bundled with VoiceLive 2. However, the VoiceSupport application offers preset and setup back-up and restore functions.

  5. Helpful critique from a user, the hand motions in this demo are like a magician, sometimes so fast that the layman cannot possibly follow. Reminds me of the tutorial vids for VL1, the feet were clicking around, after about two motions, the viewer loses track (at least the slower to learn types, self described).
Please note that this is aimed as constructive, perhaps a subtle point to be observed while making any future instructional/demonstrative video presentations.
    Thanks,
    tj

thanks for the tip. We just filmed a few more quickstart videos for the VoiceSupport install CD that will ship with the product. The videos focus more on setting up, what buttons to what. But after launch we plan on some more in depth videos – we’ll consider your points then when doing the videos.

  6. Brian,
The first symptom (this time) was a partial display on the preset/direct/song/voices screen. I did a reset on it and it came back. The next time I plugged it in, that display was gone and the other display only had a back light. I tried another reset and nothing. I was pretty sure I was going to have to send it in again. In the middle of the night I came up with the idea of reinstalling the 1.3 firmware. I tried that and discovered some diagnostics that can be accessed by plugging it in with the song and direct buttons held down and then turning the big round nob. I did the display diagnostics and everything worked until I got to the midi… that failed. Then I tried the system board and nothing. I opened it up, took out the main board, unplugged the ribbon cords, cleaned it out a bit with some radio shack parts cleaner and compressed air then reassemble it and it did do the main board test. It said I reset the sampling parameters… I don’t know about that. Anyway, restarted it and it worked fine… go figure. In the forums quite a few people have sent theirs back for repair and the repair slips have more often than not had “replace ribbon cable” on it. So maybe it just needs to be unplugged and plugged back in from time to time. It also occurred to me that I had been transporting mine upside down. I’m going to quit doing that and hope that I can make it until the VL2 is available.

Hopefully some of the reliability issues will be addressed. I’m still amazing people with the sound of the VL1, but from time to time it goes down. Usually a reset will take care of it, but this time it was a bit more stubborn… I guess that’s what happens when you don’t pay your backup singers scale.

  7. Mike, when you say your VL1 stopped working…what were the symptoms? My guitar player’s is pretty glitchy. Mine’s in great working order, but I typically clean it after each performance. Just curious coz our broken unit is out of warranty also and if there’s a simple fix, maybe that’s all it needs…

  8. I’m new to the blog… just discovered it after my VoiceLive quit working again. It’s out of warranty so I took it apart, cleaned it, unplugged and replugged the ribbon cords and it started working again. The good new is, it’s working again AND I discovered the blog.

You probably get this question a lot, but what’s the latest estimation on when the VoiceLive2 will be available for sale?

    Thanks

    Mike Rifen

Thanks for the update….and an early lesson. :) I think anything you guys can do to make the experience easier for those of us who aren’t pros, is a great thing. I like that you are keeping simplicity in mind.

I can already tell I’m going to be obsessed with this thing! I would love to see more tutorials and demos even after the product is released….perhaps on the support site?

    Waiting patiently and still psyched!

  9. Very Intuitive…keep these features comin’!!! Can’t wait to get my grubbies on the new VL2. Love the quick edit features for on the fly editing. Granted, half the fun is the deep editing, but you all have really gone above and beyond with the VL2. Nice to know I can engage those parameters so readily, as every club is a lil’ different and often needs some twilitering freaking to adjust to the size of the venue. The VL2 is exactly what I had hoped the VL1 would have been. I’m so happy to see it come into fruition. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Keep up the great work and I’ll hafta’ get a Helicon Tat!

This unit looks, and sounds, amazing. I cannot wait to get my voice into one. I currently use a Vx400 from Digitech and the foot switch just quit working – after years of hard work of course.

There was a question that I didn’t see the answer to in a previous blog… when shutting down the unit or in the event of a power failure does the unit save the output levels automatically or do you need to save them manually?

All system settings including the top level mix settings (like output level) are saved when changed – so they are remember after power cycle.
